Dave and Mary contacted the small but reputable company I worked for at the time. My boss determined it would cost less to replace the roof than to repair all the problems. 

Tired and frustrated with all the leaks, Dave and Mary reluctantly agreed. 

That's when they called me in. I'm the kind of roofer people get to fix problems like that.

The first thing I noticed was the overly-steep and needlessly-complicated roof design. A good case could be made for horse-whipping the architect... Strike one.

I noticed the wood shakes next. They’re a poor choice for the blistering sun and torrential rains here in South Florida. They were already badly split and curled... Strike Two.

The installation problems were obvious. Poor flashing details and exposed nails were the main culprits. You better know your stuff when you do a roof like that one. The first roofer didn’t... Strike three.

It was a perfect storm of roofing problems. That roof didn’t stand a chance of working. It’s no wonder it leaked all over. The boss was right... It had to go.

So we tore it off, and installed a much better roof that didn’t leak a drop. And it didn’t cost anywhere near what the first one did. Dave and Mary were able to get on with their lives. 

But what a needless waste of my time and their hard-earned money.

That was 16 years ago, when I only had five years of roofing experience. I didn’t even have my own company back then, but roof problems like Dave and Mary's were already well known to me.

I get no pleasure from situations like that. I hate to see people make these costly mistakes.

Who the Heck is This Guy... 
 and Why Should I Listen to Him?  

My name is John Bishop. I was born and raised in Michigan. That's where I got the work ethic and family values I share with a lot of you folks who migrated here from the Midwest.

After high school I served four years as a Navy Frogman. That's where I learned to be the best I could be... and never quit until the job is done.

After the Navy, I went to a community college and became a tool designer. That's where I became obsessed with good design principles... many of  which can be applied to roofing.

I’ve been married to Martha (my high school sweetheart) for 30 years now. We have three great kids and a grandson who was born in July. They taught me what love and responsibility is all about.

That's all fine and good, but I'm sure you're more interested in my roofing experience...

In 1986, a change of ownership in the tool company I worked for prompted a change of career. A good Navy buddy (Fats McFadden from New Jersey) got me started in roofing. I took to it like a duck to water. 

For the last 21 years I've worked  for big companies and small, residential and commercial, hot weather and cold. 

I've installed, repaired, maintained and replaced hundreds of roofs... including every major type of roofing system (and some of the minor ones too). 

In 2004, after four hurricanes slammed into our state in six weeks, I started my own company, QVS Roofing Inc. 

A lot of people ask me what QVS stands for. I like it when they do because it gives me a chance to give them my elevator speech. It goes like this...

What Could it Cost You if You Don't Call Us?

You could end up with one of the roofers who give our trade a bad name. Their phone isn't ringing off the hook with referrals from happy clients, so they use a cheap price to get work. 

Their cheap price usually comes from cutting corners... and  there are plenty of ways to do that in this business. 

One of the common ways is to use illegal immigrants... many of which don't know enough or don't care enough to do the job right. 

They don't know enough because they get little or no training.

They don't care enough because they are usually paid on a piece-work basis with little or no consideration for the quality of their work. What gets rewarded gets done. And if all you reward is quantity, that's what you get.

Also, with their transient lifestyle, they can walk away anytime... and frequently do. They don't have to be concerned about running into you in the grocery store like I do.

Now don't get me wrong. If I were in their shoes and had a family to feed, I might sneak into America too. 

But hiring a "roofer" like that is a small mistake that can come back to haunt you in a big way. In fact, the cheap price you get could be just your Down Payment...

Your Second Payment comes in aggravation when your new roof leaks. 

Your Third Payment is due when you have to pay another roofer because the first one can’t (or won’t) fix the problems.
